March 4 is the date Mort provided for Shemp's death certificate. March 17 was an invention of Universal in the early 1940s for Shemp's studio bio.

A question for the Howard family: When is Shemp's birthday? Some source state March 4th, while others claim March 17th. On the correct date, I'd like recommend all of us "Shempers" go to YouTube and watch our favorite Shemp scenes. Our own personal "Shempathon," if you will!

I have only been a Stooge-a-holic for 6 years. I would like to say that Shemp is far and away the best of them all. His talents were one of a kind and truly wonderful. I just would like to say or should it be ask, DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET COPIES OF HIS FILMS, MAINLY HIS SOLO SHORTS? HAVE BEEN HUNTING EVERYWHERE AND I HAVE COME UP DRY. HE RULES. Would like to say thank you for all. Have a great day. Moron4392

Jill/Sandie/Geri - Watched the Shemp tribute on your "Shemp Cocktail" DVD. Thought you would like to know that the picture of Shemp with his father isn't from WWI. Solomon is visiting the set of "The Officer's Mess" (1935), a service comedy Shemp did at Vitaphone.

I hope Shemp's family can convince Sony to put bonus footage on the "Three Stooges Collection" volumes that will feature Shemp, namely all 15 of his solo Columbia shorts (1938-47) and some kinescopes of the boys' appearances on Frank Sinatra Show, Colgate Comedy Hour, and Milton Berle show. Likewise I hope they can convince Warner Home Video to cash in on Sony's series by releasing a 3 disc DVD collecting all thier Stooge library: the 5 MGM shorts plus "Roast Beef & Movies" and "Jailbirds of Paradise", plus all 30 of Shemp's Vitaphone (Warner Bros) shorts (1933-37).

I just found your website right after I found the Stoogeum website through wikipedia. I have always been a big fan of "The Stooges" and I have always felt that Shemp was funnier than Curly. I also discovered through my research that Christine Mc Intyre hated her work with the Three Stooges and would never discuss it with anyone. Is this really true? I understand that every actress wants to be taken seriously but her work with the boys was really very funny. Please reply. Thanks.

Rick - C3 owns the trademark rights to the 3 Stooges, and litigated Shemp's family in recent years over ownership of "Shemp". The family wants their site to be a tribute to Shemp Howard, not to C3's "property".

I am confused. There is very little 3 stooges content on this page. The Howard family made the "Three Stooges" famous. You could have plugged in almost any actor with Moe, Curly or Shemp and had just as much success. Don't get me wrong. I loved Larry, Joe was passable, the third one was just forgettable.

I want to thank you, dear ladies, for putting together this site. How proud you must be of your heritage. Shemp Howard was a comedic genius. The footwork he employed when engaging an adversary in fisticuffs always cracks me up. His comedic timing and dialog were flawless. Thank you for giving this master of film comedy the attention he so richly deserves. What else is there to be said? "There ain't no Moe."

I gotta say,I agree with Scott. This is a wonderful site (the sound clips are so funny) and its really great that Shemp is getting some recognition. He brought so much to the Stooges, and people hardly notice him. I love to watch both Shemp and Curly episodes, but I must say theres some sort of comedic intelligence about him, thats one of a kind.

I told him there was no such film, and he responded, " Well, he makes me laugh anyway, especially when he saves Larry and Moe when they get beat up...God Bless Shemp!

My great-uncle was Cy Schindel who performed in several of the Stooge shorts as well as small parts in other movies, most notably the classic "It's a Wonderful Life." Cy had a daughter, Jacqueline, who was my father's 1st cousin. Our family has lost track of Jackie, as well as any children she might have had. Does anyone out there know anything about Cy Schindel (also known as Cy Schindell and Al Seymour) or his descendants? He died in 1948 and is buried in Los Angeles.

SHOT IN THE FRONTIER (1954) is not on DVD. It was on an early '90s VHS from GoodTimes; mediocre video quality; out-of-print for about 15 years. Sony/Columbia released its first chronological DVD set of Stooge shorts in Oct. 2007, "The Three Stooges Collection Volume 1 1934-1936," glorious new prints from restored negatives. If the studio maintains a regular release schedule, it'll be a couple more years before FRONTIER is released. 3 Stooges home video database, 1980 - Today... http://www.threestooges.net/videography.php

Shemp has always been my favorite stooge ever since I was young watching the stooges reruns on Sunday mornings (not sure why they were on Sundays but they always seemed to be when I was a kid). I liked Shemp so much that I decided that if I ever had a pet I would pick one out that reminded me of Shemp and name him Shemp. Well, I have an 11 year old cat named Shemp that I rescued from a shelter when she (yes she) was just a little kitten. She's a great stooge and carries on Shemp's name very well. Keep the shemp stuff coming on the website. Great stuff!

I am Merle William Goodwin (Bill). My mother Frances (Fay) was one of Babe's older sisters. I lost track of Babe and Shemp after Morton's untimely death. I would dearly like to be able to make ontact with Babe's grand daughters. If they would send me an email,it sure would be apprec- iated. My daughter Susan came on this site and sent it to me. It is wonderful. My mother and I lived for about six months in the same apartment in Bensonhurst (sp?) as Shemp, Babe and Morton. She was taking care of her brother Sid who was very seriously injured in a car accident. I treasure that time as it was the only time that Morton, I and Anna's son Dudley were living in the same neighborhood. I hope to hear from Babe's grand daughters.

Greetings. We might be cousins or something like that. My name is Sue Goodwin. My grandmother was Babe's sister ... so my Dad was Shemp and Babe's nephew. His name is Merle William Goodwin. He actually spent a summer living with Shemp and Babe when grandma took care of another sick sibling I think. I would love to be in touch with you.

As kids we watched the Stooges everyday after school. Most of my friends liked Curly, but I loved Shemp as the third Stooge. To this day, I am in awe of his artistry and have converted many into Shemp fanatics with just one viewing of the “Cousin Basil” scene or the faux boxing session with the insurance adjuster (played by Vernon Dent) or “Squareheads of the Round Table”. That’s all it takes. One-by-one they have all come to agree Shemp rules! When Curly had to retire it would have been easy for Moe and Larry to find a “Curly-lite”. But someone like Shemp was needed to walk in (and step out of) Curly’s shadow, not a Curly copy-cat. And no one else but Shemp could pull it off. He is my pantheon of all-time greats!

Among those films are "Shot In The Frontier", "Hugs And Mugs", "Hot Scots", "Scotched In Scotland" and "Love At First Bite". I really feel that these films are prime examples of the underrated talent that Shemp possessed. You have a wonderful web site here and it is a fine tribute to your grandfather, Shemp. Shemp what can I say about a man who represents comedy in it’s purest form. A man that developed his art form into what I believe is an American treasure. I as a great fan of Shemp believe him to be a genius of movement and sound. He created comical magic every time he set foot in front of the camera. He amazed all those he worked with, including my greatest friend the late Stooge Director Edward Bernds who had the privilege of working with him on numerous films. Ed made no secrets about it Shemp was his favorite Stooge of them all. Ed loved the man. One of the many Shemp photographs Ed autographed for me he wrote these words “Lovable, Laughable Shemp my Favorite Edward Bernds.” I hope they are together again, smiling and content.

I have only recently started searching out his non-stooge related work and what I've seen so far has been hilarious. I hope to see this site continue to grow and give us a more in-depth look in to this wondefully funny man. Love the scrapbook photo's MORE PLEASE!!!!

Hi, Jill and Sandie! So glad to hear that you're looking at merchandising some Shemp goodies. I agree with one of our other fan club members that something(perhaps a halloween card) has got to be done with the image of "Shemp bat". Also, perhaps we could have a "Gospel According to Shemp"(drawing from "Heavenly Daze") Bible study. Hey---the Andy Griffith Show has one! :) God bless you!!! Rev. Kenny Heath ("amateur Moe")

Hello my good friends Jill and Sandie! Very nice to hear from you on the Stooge group! You know, I'm really honored to have my drawings always on exhibition in your wonderful site, and I can't thank you enough for that. Shemp truly deserves my work and much more. And he would be very proud to have such granddaughters! Well, speaking of Shemp merchandise, I would like to see neckties with Shemp photos on them. Usually we're accustomed to see Three Stooges ties with Curly as the third Stooge only, no Shemp or Joe Besser images. So Shemp ties would be the perfect accesory. My best always, Diego from Argentina. ¡Shemp por siempre! ¡Viva Shemp!

I just love to see the personal sides of the Stooges, to prove that they were, and are, real flesh-and-blood working class people like you and I. The sons of Lithuanian immigrants whose hands and sweat built America. The Stooges admitedly played the cesspools of the show business world, but today they're known and loved around thw world, unlike a few other comedy teams who "made the big time" in movies! Shemp Howard (Shmool Horvitz) was a unique talent and a terrific guy in his private life! Wish I had known him! Thanks!

The following is a letter that I posted on Shempcompany.com,on 12/19/2002:This is a letter that I wrote to C3,on 8/1/2002.To whom it may concern-Everyone seems to forget that there were four original members of The Three Stooges.Whenever most people talk about the Stooges,it's always about Moe,Larry and Curly. What about Shemp?
6/19/2005 Tammy Nethery Netheryplace@aol.com

Don't get me wrong-I like Curly as much as any other dyed-in-the-wool Stooges fan-but Shemp deserves some long overdue recognition and credit! He always gets pushed aside and forgotten as though he wasn't important at all.Shemp was extremely important,as he was one of the founding members of The Three Stooges. He helped to establish many of their routnes and to develop the famous "eye poke".
6/19/2005 Tammy Nethery Netheryplace@aol.com

When Curly joined the Stooges,Shemp went on to enjoy a successful solo career that spanned 15 years and included nearly 100 films.Shemp was a star, but was forced to give it all up and take a demotion by returning to an act that he didn't want to return to.
6/19/2005 Tammy Nethery Netheryplace@aol.com

It's ridiculous why such a talented comedic character actor like Shemp Howard is so unappreciated and ignored! There's no telling what would have happened to The Three Stooges had Shemp not returned to the act.He returned mainly, because he cared about his brothers and their families as well as Larry and his family, and was concerned about what would happen to them, had the act not continued.Shemp was a very thoughtful, caring, unselfish man!
6/19/2005 Tammy Nethery Netheryplace@aol.com
Comments
It's about time to bring Shemp out of"Curly's shadow"and into the spotlight where he belongs! He was just as talented as everyone else and deserves respect! He wasn't a "second rate replacement",nor did he try to imitate anyone. He was an original Stooge who used his own talents and abilities. He was a very gifted improvisational comedian and slapstick actor! It's about time everyone recognizes that fact!He spent the last 9 years of his life starring in those Three Stooges films, and saved the act while doing so.Also, there are only 38 Three Stooges films, starring Shemp,on video-where are the other 39?
6/19/2005 Tammy Nethery Netheryplace@aol.com

There should be more merchandise featuring Shemp! He deserves more than a tee shirt that says he is the "Forgotten Stooge".Shemp Howard was one of the greatest entertainers who ever lived and should never be forgotten! He contributed the most regarding the success of the act, especially, when he gave up his solo career to please everyone else! There probably wouldn't have been any Stooges had Shemp not been one of the ones who started it all.Anyone who doesn't appreciate Shemp is not a true Stooge fan. There are many others who share my opinion.Shemp contributed the most and gets forgotten the most.It doesn't make one bit of sense!A true Stooge fan,Tammy Nethery

Just a question really. I know that Shemp and Babe loved your father Mort very much, and they must have been really proud of him and his achievements. But it seems odd that they only had one child. Shemp clearly loved children and was a clown to them. And from footage I've seen of Shemp and his family he loved fooling around with the kids. My question is did Shemp and Babe not want anymore children other than Mort? They seemed like really doting and loving parents who loved kids.
